If only the United States have chosen a non-dualistic view of Vietnam, we would not have suffered so much destruction in both countries. The battle continues to hurt, both the United States and Vietnam. If we give enough attention, we can still learn from the war in Vietnam. Last year we conducted research which is very beautiful with Vietnam veterans in the United States. It is very difficult to research, because many of us can not free ourselves from our bitterness. One man told me that in Vietnam, he lost 417 people in just one battle, and he must live in the incident for 15 years. Another person told me that because of anger and revenge, he killed the children in a village, and after that, he lost all his peace. Since then he could not sit alone with the children in one room. There are many kinds of suffering, and they can prevent us from dealing with the world that does not suffer.
We should help each other to interact. One soldier said to me, that research is the first time in 15 years where he felt safe in a group of people. For 15 years, he could not swallow solid food with ease.He could only drink a little bit of juice and eat fruit. He is totally isolated and unable to communicate. But after practicing for 3 to 4 days, he began to open and talk with other people. You have to give a sense of love and compassion that abound on people like that in order to help him in touch with everything else. During the research, we do practice breathing and conscious smile, pushing back the interest in us, and the trees and blue skies that shade us.
We eat breakfast in peace. We practice the way I eat breakfast like eating cake in my childhood. We do everything like that, stepping deliberately to touch the earth, breathe consciously to touch the air, and observe the tea in depth to be truly in touch with the tea. We sat together and breathe together, walking together, and learn from our experience in Vietnam. Vietnam veterans who are possessed of a nation want to tell them about how to deal with other issues that may occur, the issues are no different from the question of Vietnam. Because of our suffering, we must learn something.
We need the views together so that we have each other, the fact we can not cut into pieces. Welfare "this" is the well-being "it", so we must do everything together. Each side is "our side" there are no bad side. These veterans have the experience that makes them light at the end of the candle. Clearly illuminates the roots of war and on the road to peace.
