Water for Lips {Lip Care}

Ok, so summers are gone and monsoons are already raging down on us. And, places which are cooler and highly humid come with another disadvantage. You forget to drink water because the thirst is not felt so much as much as in scorching heat. So, it is very important that you keep on sipping water little by little every one hour so that you don't go dry because it will affect your health first and then the skin, hair and lips show the signs of dryness. Lip becomes dry very easily when you don't drink enough water so make sure before applying your favorite lip balms or lip treatments, you are drinking enough water.

Turmeric for Sore Throat {DIY}

Ok, so this is such an awesome and super quick remedy that I have become a big fan of turmeric now. As I told you that I am suffering from cold and I had this sore throat a few days back which I had to treat super quick, so I was just googling for remedies and then I came across this and tried out. And, it worked like a charm!!! So, if you get a sore throat ever, you should definitely try out this remedy before you go to anything else (even medicines and a doc). We have been trying out turmeric for skin, now try for sore throats.

Ingredients
  • Hot water (preferably as hot as you can drink without burning your throat and blistering your tongue)
  • Table spoon of Turmeric
  • Honey (optional)
Mix all the three and drink as fast a possible. Or, better, take large gulps of the drink. Trust me, its not very tasty so I had put honey too and honey is also said to be good for throat. I had taken it twice - once in the night and another in the morning and I was sweating all night and in the morning, my throat pain was considerably better. I think this drink helps with fever too but I am not very sure but I was sweating really badly so guess you can try this for fever too.

If you take my advise, I think one should take this drink the moment person feels the irritation in the throat which comes as a sign of cold. I think that would stop the cold then and there coz bearing full cold is really tedious.

Eucalyptus Oil for Cold {DIY}

Oh yes, I am most definitely ad very uncomfortably suffering from cold so you are suffering from a barrage of cold related posts. Yeah, I stick to Eucalyptus Oil during cold but I didn't try taking bath with it ever. So, try this out. Let out really hot water (which might make your skin dry), add a tablespoon of eucalyptus oil to a bucket of water (change the proportions accordingly) and take bath with it. Make sure you bathe in really hot water. It will give immense relief and the experience is even better when the water is steaming hot so it releases eucalyptus oil vapors. Your bathroom will smell of the oil for hours later on and it will give a little bit of relief surely. Otherwise, taking bath while having cold feels really tiring.

Bilberry Extract {Ingredient}

Bilberry Fruit (Source: Wikipedia)
Recently, my eye doc prescribed me supplements of anti-oxidants. I checked the composition of the supplements and the tablets contain Bilberry Extract.

What is a Bilberry Extract??
Bilberry extract is an extremely potent anti-oxidant extracted from the Bilberry fruit.
"Bilberries are a rich source of anthocyanosides, a class of flavanoids recognized for their importance  in eye health. Bilberry anthocyanosides are potent antioxidants in the visual cells of the retina, and help in maintaining normal blood flow in the fine capillary blood vessels that nourish the eyes and other tissues, preventing disorders like macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma while improving vision in general". - Form the information leaflet provided with the tablets.
Benefits of Bilberry
  • The major use for which I was prescribed this supplement was that Bilberry extract helps protect from 'Macular Degeneration' (loss of vision due to damage to retina)
  • It improves the night vision
  • It is supposed to help with gastrointestinal disorders too
  • As with every anti-oxidant, it helps protect from skin disorders and diseases

    Eye Sight and Retina Detachment {Health}

    Hi guys!!!
    So, this post is about Retina Detachment. This is something very important for people who suffer from myopic (negative power) eyesight.

    Retina Detachment means what the term states - the retina detaches from other layers of the eye and, as you can infer, it can lead to blindness and acute vision problems. This disorder stats at a very early age and takes a considerable time to spread and cause severe problems. Thus, it is very important to get your retina checked regularly for early diagnosis of any such disorder. This disorder starts with little pockets of holes in the retina which can be easily treated by laser treatment. So, go to a retina specialist if you have even an eye sight of -1. The doctor himself said that the holes in the retina can occur for anyone who has eye sight problems whether it is high or negligible.

    So, how did I come across this. Well, I was recommended to a retina specialist by my regular eye doc. And, he told me I had three holes in my left eye retina so he did the laser treatment (Laser Photocoagulation) in which the eye vessels are fused or burned or something which I am not entirely clear off coz I really didn't ask the doc what he was doing. Well, this laser does hurt. It is a simple procedure which doesn't take more than 5 minutes for a single hole but when the laser is pointed in the eye, it hurts bad (not really bad but its a completely different feeling which I can't explain). This treatment is different from that of getting rid of the eye sight (in case you are confused among both). But, there are no after-effects yet. I had this procedure two weeks back. That day, I suffered with a bad pain in the eyebrow bone for which I had to take a combiflame when I realized I couldn't handle it (I like to avoid medicines). I was given eye drops course which was necessary to be put in the eyes for 4-5 times a day without fail. Thats it. Nothing else and no problem in vision or anything. But, yup, there is one thing - stay away from sunlight. Even after this long time, my eyes have started to hurt me if stay for more than an hour in strong sunlight. I think eyes will take a little time to get adjusted to the glare. But, nothing to worry about otherwise.

    So, don't forget to talk to your eye doc and ask about retina check up next time. And, yes, it is must that you visit an eye doc every six months or one year if you are under 40 but for people over 40, every six months is a must coz there is a high probability of cataract and glaucoma.

    Pull back your shoulders {Health}

    Ok, so this is the most difficult in the series of right postures. Even I am not sure of how to explain and even I have not yet practiced it accurately that I can tell you how to do it. It is said that you should pull your shoulders back but it is no where specified how and how exactly to do without looking too stiff. One thing I can mention is that pull back your shoulders only a little so that they are parallel to the hips when you are sitting or standing. Generally, they are not coz we tend to slump forward a little. This would cause your chest to come a little forward and make your breasts look firmer.

    But, do not make the position so stiff that the muscles of your back start to ache. So, try various positions and select the one which is most comfortable and makes you look a little upright than what you currently are. That would mean you are pulling your shoulders back. Ok, one more thing which I would add before concluding this series is that pull your whole body into an attention position when you are standing but without looking too stiff so that it looks as if you have all your body parts in control without being too uncomfortable. Generally, it is also said to suck your stomach inside but I wouldn't recommend that as it makes it difficult to breathe deeply. Another sign that you are holding the right body posture is that it allows you to breathe deeply without too much of an effort.

    Working on computers and desks

    People are spending more and more time in front of computers and on desks absorbed into the files and worksheets and end up with craned necks. So, what is the remedy? While you are sitting in front of the computer, it is always useful to learn typing because it helps the person to focus on the screen instead of keyboard. This way you don't have to spend whole time straining yourself looking at the keys. This way your neck is not bending over. While working on the files and worksheets, use a slanting board (like the drawing boards or the boards seen at the architects offices) or some accessory which you can use to place the files to look at them easily instead of bending over them. Always work in good lighting areas and make maximum use of the day light. It is good for the body too. And, take frequent breaks while working so that your body is not cramped into one position for a longer period of time.

    Also, it is very important that you do not bend over anythign unless you are bending to pick up something. Do not ever sit hunched up or slump while sitting. It makes you look fat, unconfident and really unattractive. Sitting in the upright position indicates you are attentive.

    Sit on the ground

    Ok, many people don't do that now a days. But, it is probably the best posture for your body. Your body must be used to sitting and sleeping on the hard ground. The reason is that the bones of the body are then used to bending at their most. I know a person who can not sit on the ground and I tried to inculcate that habit. Now, it is easy for the person but a regular practice is necessary otherwise the joints become stiff and body refuses to obey properly and sitting on the ground becomes very difficult.
    Move the bones of your body. It is also helpful in arthritis and osteoporosis. There is even a condition called osteo-arthritis in which the lubrication of the joint reduces and joint pains start so avoid that by giving regular exercise to your muscles and joints. That is why it is advised to use the stairs as it increases the bending of the joints in the leg.

    Keep your head parallel to the ground

    Well, you might think that you are doing that but most of the times, your neck is bent over whatever you are doing. So, take care and avoid doing that. Instead, use your eyes to look at the whatever you are doing unless you are really bending over something. Do not drop and bend your neck separately. Ideally, your head and neck should always be at 90 degrees to the ground even while you are working on a computer. Yes, that is why it is advantageous to learn typing. (In case you think I know typing, no I don't!!) But, I am not preaching here, just stating a simple fact of how it should be. Keep the head portion straight even while walking. It is not always if you notice. But, refrain from putting your nose in the air, trust me some people do that!!! Probably, they don't know. And, some slump their necks which makes them look unconfident. So, both positions are dangerous. See that you are not overdoing either.

    An added advantage of this position is that it draws attention to your neck even if it is not that long and makes you look slimmer overall. Btw, if you do this regularly, you will see an immediate change int he shape of your neck too. There is a reduction in the fat deposit in the neck area and it makes you look taller and confident.

    Furniture and Sitting Postures

    Furniture plays a lot of role in determining the body posture of a person. You must be well aware of the ergonomic studies being carried out these days. Did you know that in earlier days, there was a carpenter for each house who used to create the furniture specially for everyone based on their convenience and physical build? Yes, there were ergonomic practices in ancient times too. So, now we understand that how important it is to use the right chair and right stool. Even the furniture brands have research divisions these days. I know Godrej has.

    Swivel chairs or rotating chairs should not be used as they put pressure on the back. If you have to use them, use the ones which have adjustment levers so that the chair can be adjusted according to your height. Always have the desk at the right height - not too high or too low. Your hands should always be parallel to the ground while resting on your desk and thighs should also be parallel to the ground while sitting in the chair with your buttock touching the back of the chair. Some offices have become pretty employee friendly in such issues and are taking care of the ergonomic needs while others have to yet realize the importance. If you do not like the furniture at your office, consider buying your own or moving some of the necessities. Some do agree but not all.

    Similarly, bucket seats in the cars or the sofas might be too attractive and too comfortable but I do not think they are very friendly coz they suck you in and to get up, you really need to struggles and get up out of them. This is entirely my opinion. I have not done research on bucket seats. I personally do not like them coz I hate the idea of struggling to getting up and I don't really feel comfortable in them. Likewise, do not buy a sofa set or other sitting accessories which are too low for someone to sit. It puts a lot of strain. On the other hand, you can use a simple diwan setting which is just an inch or two raised from the ground. But, not anything in between. Thats just too uncomfortable and people, generally, don't even prefer that. Same things go for beds.

    When it comes to dining tables, it is better to buy chairs which do not have cushions. And, the chair should be of the right size to the table. You might have noticed in some restaurants which have sofas, if you sit on the sofas, you just fall into it and it is on an uncomfortable level in respect to the table. So, remember that while selecting your dining tables.

    Sit fully back on the chair

    Many of us tend to sit just in the front portion of the chair. Sometimes our legs don't reach the ground or on other times, we are just nervous. But, the main part of body taking bearing all that burden is the spinal cord. Not sitting properly on the chair does not give proper support to the hips and the body is not in a relaxed position. Thus, sit with your buttocks touching the back of the chair and keep your spine upright. You don't have to sit poker straight but keeping spine in s reasonably straight position helps in strengthening the spine as well as providing proper support for the body. It is difficult to get used to in the starting so you may slump once every half hour for 2-3 minutes as a relaxation.

    Also, it is said that keeping your spine poker straight at 90 degrees from the ground level is not relaxing but strains the spine. So, you can get a chair which has 105-135 degrees angle or you may also use a soft pillow to cushion the small of your back just above the buttock region. Either or doing both of these also helps in relaxing the spine a lot and creates a comfortable position for anyone to sit in.And, don't forget to rest your legs on a stool or something raised above the ground. Generally, a chair which has a holding connecting the legs acts as a good foot stool.

    Do not hang your legs from the chairs

    In the last post, I briefly described some situations where working for long time on computers is wreaking havoc on health. So, I am mentioning something from the last post itself. Never ever leave your legs hanging from the chairs. If you are not tall enough, keep a stool in front of the chair to rest your legs.

    You might have noticed that there is a foot rest almost every where in the buses or flights or chair cars. That is not luxury but a necessity. Resting your legs on a little higher level than your ground does not put unnecessary pressure on the spinal cord and eases the blood circulation which stops when the legs are hanging. There is a lot of pressure on the lower spinal cord too when the legs are hanging. Even the hips hurt when you do that. And, kids tend to do this often. So, prevent that.

    Body Postures and Health Issues

    Hey guys!!! I was watching Femina Miss India today (I know I'm late so just felt like catching up). One thing which you notice very soon in these kinds of pageant contests is the carriage of the contestants. They not only talk well and look beautiful but carry themselves pretty well and a major part of that comes with their body postures. Body Posture is a study in a itself and it is extremely important to maintain a good posture. A good posture can make you look thinner, appear taller and enhance your personality; not to mention help you in losing your weight and increases your confidence levels.

    Personally, I did try for a week or so maintaining a proper sitting posture with straight back and no slumping at all and honestly, I could tell the difference in my weight, in my height and carriage and also it helped me relieve some of the stress too. Now, I do work on computer a lot and so do a lot of my friends and peers and almost everyone today spends a lot of time on computers. And, of course, its not very easy to sit in front of computers in the swivel chairs so we tend to lose the correct posture after a certain amount of time. And, then there is a matter of office furniture (or a lack of it!!) and we do tend to forget to relax while working on the computer. Yes, concentrating for a long time on computers does play havoc with the minds too in increasing the stress and making us forgetful. So, we forget that we can relax ourselves of the strain by getting up from the chair or looking beyond the screen in front of us. Oh, btw, in case you think getting bigger screen is better, let me tell you bigger the screen more is the strain coz you are very close to the screen.

    So, one of my friend always keeps on complaining about back pain or leg aches or wrist strains or neck-shoulder stiffness and she sits in front of the computer for like 8 hours a day on average. I know its lot less if we compare to some of the software geeks but still it is a lot and I do not blame our work for that coz our work can be divided into two parts - in front of computer and away from computer. So, one just have to remember to stay away from computer when not needed. But, then I am not even blaming my friend!!! Its just that the workplace is designed so. Not fair at all.

    Then, there is another of the lady who has all sorts of medical issues just due to the bad furniture in her office. She is pretty short so when she sits in a swivel chair, her legs don't reach the ground so they just remain hanging. Now, you might be aware that no part of your body should be left hanging because the blood circulation stops in those parts of the body. Same thing happened with her legs and now her legs are pretty much weak. Not fair at all, right?? Offices should take care of their employees too.

    Now, the next generation is all addicted to video games and computers and who has any time to go outdoors and play some games and have fun!!! The social life today has become restricted to facebook and twitter. So, body problems are bound to arise. How to prevent all these kinds of problems??? Watch out for the next post.

    Prevent Sunstroke with Onions and Lemon

    I don't know how many of the people are aware of this age old remedy but it is quite popular. Onions are a great remedy to increase the resistance to sunstrokes internally. Yes, I know, you can't just keep on eating onions but try to eat as much as possible especially at night. And, yes, they hydrate the body also because of their high water content. So, chop up more onions :)

    Another remedy is drinking a lot of lemon juice (exclude the sugar to avoid calories and salt to avoid puffiness). Yeah, it is damn bitter in taste but once you get used to it, it goes down easily. Oh, and you can use honey too.

    And, here comes my favorite. This is for people who like their food a little tangy. Whenever you are eating onions, squeeze a lot of lemon juice on them. You can add a little bit salt or better yet, avoid salt altogether. Add some green chilli (don't go overboard; it will burn your stomach all day). Enjoy your meal with this twist. And, the main advantage of doing this is that lemon juice reduces the edgy taste of the onion and makes your breath smell less of onions.

    Onion and green chillies make you sweat a lot so you can decide when to eat and when to skip. But, onions are abundant in sulphur which promotes hair growth and green chillies have a lot of vitamin C so don't skip them completely. Btw, don't forget to load up on tomatoes and spinach as they act as natural sunscreen from the inside.

    Apple Cider Vinegar Health Benefits {Health}

    Some days back, I posted on how drinking Apple Cider Vinegar helps with breakouts. In the post, I had mentioned very briefly that even people who do not suffer from breakouts can drink it. Why?? Because of the various health benefits it poses.

    What is Apple Cider Vinegar???
    As the name says, it is made from apples. It is actually made from apple skin and apple cores but not the meat and then it is actually double fermented using yeasts or bacteria. So, it is especially rich in nutrients and minerals due to the presence of apple and the enzymes created during the fermentation process. It is golden brown in color and has really high levels of acidity so it is used only in garnishing instead of intaking it raw.

    Apple cider vinegar contains valuable minerals such as Phosphorus, Calcium, Sodium, Potassium, Iron, Magnesium, and Chlorine. It also contains Sulfur, Copper, Silicon, Fluorine, Provitamin beta-carotene, Pectin and malic acid. (Source: Wikipedia)
    Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar
    • Weight Loss - It suppresses the fat accumulation in the body especially around the tummy
    • Skin - It prevents against breakouts and acts as an anti-inflammatory
    • Improves immune system
    • Controls the cholesterol levels
    • Increases the stamina
    • Increases metabolism
    • Improves digestion
    • Prevents stone formations in the body
    These are just a subset of the health benefits which can be acquired from drinking Apple Cider Vinegar regularly. You will get plethora of results when you google it so I have just summarized a few here.

    Risks of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
    • Acetic Acid (present in any vinegar; ACV has high concentration of acetic acid) can lower potassium levels in the body and reduces the bone density making the bones weaker in the process
    • Since ACV has high acidity, it shouldn't be taken raw
    How to drink Apple Cider Vinegar??
    The above mentioned risks are associated with intaking of ACV  on a regular basis for a very long time. Thus, keeping this in mind, I had advised to intake ACV during breakouts and dilute only a tablespoon of ACV per day in a liter of water.

    To reap the benefits of ACV, drink ACV only once in three days (when not facing breakouts; during breakouts make it once a day) diluting only a tablespoon of ACV in a liter of water. This is safe and would give the amazing benefits of ACV.

    P.S.1: Happy April Fools Day!!! Sorry for the belated wish. In fact, I had totally forgotten  about it. So, how many of you got fooled today???? Do share your amusing experiences :)
    P.S.2: Finally, the world cup is here. So, lets hope India wins!!! All the best guys :)

    Beware of where you are eating!

    Hopefully, you have seen Blood Brothers which I had posted a few days back. If you missed it, watch it here. Now, I was talking that I was having a discussion with my friend about HIV-AIDS. Durign the convo, he narrated an incident which happened almost a decade back in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.

    The incident went something like this. There was a panipuri guy who used to serve really good panipuris in Banjara Hills. One day he got a cut in his hand which he did not bother to cover or treat and obviously he could not stop serving panipuris coz of a cut so he continued with an open wound. And, a month later some person was detected positive for HIV. So, ultimately a trace was run on how he got the disease and it was found that the panipuri wala was the cause. That day around 80-85 people who ever had panipuri at that guy's stall were detected positive for HIV. This incident garnered a lot of media attention though I could not find any details on the net. If you do or know anything about the incident (even if I am wrong), please do share the news.

    This incident whether true or not had raised a lot of questions in my mind. I am a person who loves to eat junk and all the road side crap (even if I stop you from dong so). I try to curb my junk food cravings but chat and panipuri are my loves and I can't leave them totally. Now, I donno how many of you would agree with me on this but I always found roadside items to be more tasty than the same items available at a posh restaurant. Well, that might be psychological too. But, whatever the case be, I wanted to warn everyone including myself from eating too much outside because the food can be unhygienic. Even the cutlery is enough to transmit the viruses and bacteria from one person to another.

    I know that this post of mine would have an impact for at max a week. It is not easy to leave the habit of eating outside. So, I would just list down certain tips which can help you maintain a decent level of hygiene.
    • Avoid using cutlery in places where you can. Going to road side stalls, sweet shops, small local restaurants and dhabas are places where you can avoid cutlery easily.
    • When the plates are put in front of you, wipe them with a tissue once on your own.
    • Where you are doubtful about the quality of water, order a mineral water bottle or better yet, carry your own bottle of water.
    • Check the seal of mineral water bottle and always order bottles of cokes and other drinks.
    • Do not worry about the quality of water used in cooking coz temperature destroys many bacteria.
    • Always wash your hands before you eat. Prefer to carry a small tube of hand wash or a cheap face wash will also do the job. Anti-bacterials are not as effective as soaps.
    • Try to choose a hygienic place where self-service is allowed.
    • Avoid anything given in newpaper wraps (road side chats and other things).
    • If you are really interested in eating them, carry your own tiffin box and ask him to put the item in your box. Newpapers have a lot of germs.
    • Similarly, do not ever put your hand in your mouth after handling cash. Cash notes change a lot of hands so always avoid handling cash before eating.
    • You can wear gloves to keep your hands clean when using public transports.
    These are certain precautions which can be taken to avoid unnecessary diseases. And, I am not just talking about AIDS, Hepatitis and TB but also simple cold and coughs and other unnecessary complications.

    How much weight do you want to lose?

    Ok, so I came across a story of Isabelle Caro. I am not sure how many of you have read the story so I am recounting it for everyone. Isabelle Caro was a French model who died in November, 2010 due to anorexia. She was 28. Anorexia is an eating disorder caused by losing too much weight and not partaking proper nutrition to meet the daily dietary needs.

    Isabelle Caro was anorexic since the age of 13 due to her personal life. And, when she joined modeling, she was advised to lose 10 kilos to survive in the fashion world. She had been hospitalized at the age of 20 for the first time. In 2006, she had slipped into coma where it was predicted that she would not survive. At that time, she was weighing only 25 kilograms. Since she recovered, she has been trying to gain weight and was weighing 33 at the time of her death. The video is an interview of Isabelle Caro with Jessica Simpson for the documentary series "The Price of Beauty."

    The idea of telling you this story was not to discourage modeling or to show the fashion world as an unsightly profession. This thing of losing weight runs much deeper than that. First reason is to fit into that favorite dress which is only available for a size 2 or 4. Or, to equate yourself to some sexy gal who might be luring the guy you have your heart set on. We all want to become thin.

    Recently, my father went to Baba Ramdev's shivir. He told me an amusing incident which happened there. One of the girls present there asked him how to go about losing weight. He asked her what her weight and height were. They were proportional and the reply given to her was "What more do you want to lose?"

    I would not deny that even I was a part of this brigade until I joined my college. The girls in the school were athletically thin and I was not. So, people did make fun of me. I still had my baby fat. As a consequence, I did feel bad and tried to exercise but I am so irregular at that so I could never stick around with it. But, gradually, I lost my puppy fat and grew to be fine proportioned though still on the heavier side. But, as I reached college, I came to an equation with myself that I can never get thinner than what I was and my only vow at that time was to stay healthy and well-toned. I have always been healthy but even today I am struggling with the well-toned concept. But, definitely, I am a big foodie and have never given up on food. I have fasted a couple of Mondays in my life but they were never done with the viewpoint of losing weight. Instead, I always ended up eating more in the night.

    Peer pressure and societal strictures dictate our outlook at life.Not only those, genes can dictate your body type whether you would be anorexic or elephantine. And, of course, there is always a psychological background to it all. Be happy with what you have. When ever you feel like throwing up the food for the sake of losing weight, think about the people who have no access to the luxuries you take for granted and thus, suffer and die of hunger.And, I mean this from the bottom of my heart without sounding preachy. So, the summary of the story is that there is no point starving yourself to lose weight. Follow a healthy routine and you would definitely remain in shape. On that note, I am leaving you with an extremely shocking ad. Check it out for yourself.
